Bookbinding I: Introduction to Bookbinding

November 30, 2007: 2pm-5pm

In this 3 hour course, the students will get an introduction class to basic bookbinding.

We will make 4 to 5 different books, with a variety of structures like a pamphlet binding and an accordion book among others. This class teaches about the very basics, the folding techniques and simple sawing, and prepares the students for an Intermediate class. The course also includes a tour of the bindery. All materials are included for the class.

Instructor: Lena LeMoal

The cost for the workshop is $45.

Bookbinding II (Adhesive Binding)

January 11, 2008: 2pm-5pm

This class follows Bookbinding I (Non-Adhesive Binding), and introduces a wide range of techniques necessary for advanced bookbinding, including essential sewing techniques and the skill of pasting cloth onto boards. Lena LeMoal, a bookbinder who has practiced the art in Paris and in Texas, will lead the group in creating a single hardbound book with exposed sewing on the spine. Enrollment in Bookbinding I or approval of the instructor is required; a maximum of four students will fit around the binders’ table for each section of the class.

Instructor: Lena LeMoal

The cost for the workshop is $45.

Bookbinding III

Case Binding
Instructor: Myssie Light

In this high energy, fast paced class, advanced students will complete 1 or 2 flat back case style bindings covered in cloth and decorated paper. Basic bookbinding skills are reviewed and applied throughout the process; - these include preparing the textblock (folding, punching, sewing, attaching endsheets, spine treatment and endbands).

Making the case and "casing in" are introduced through demonstrations and hands on practice exercises before applying these new skills. Bookbinding I & II are prerequisites for this class.

A list of tools needed will be provided upon registration for the class. All materials are included.
Tuition $160 -- Materials Fee $15
